4/10/12 to 4/14/12 - San Francisco to Eugene

(4/10/12) SF to Bodega Bay - 94 miles
Tuesday started rainy and hungover. The burlesque show in Oakland the night before treated me well. Thanks Suriani. That was fun.

After getting lost in Berkeley/Oakland trying to find the Bay Bridge, I made my way into SF to visit the guys at KTMtwins.com. They have been one of the only places to find the parts I needed for the 690. When noon rolled around and I haven't eaten yet, It's time for food soon. Ron (KTMtwins.com) suggested "The Pork Store" which was a couple blocks away. It lived up to the expectations.

The story for the next 4 days was Rain. Rain. Rain. Tuesday night was spent at the "Bodega Harbor Inn". It was cheaper than hotels in socal but I am still over budget. The Australian front desk lady had made for some great conversations over a drink later.

(4/11/12) Bodega Bay to Garberville - 197 miles
A comfortable bed often leads to a late start. Which was to bad because Wednesday morning had a beautiful sun that was burning off the rain and fog from the night before. This lasted for about a half hour before it started raining again. Then hail. Then sun. Then rain. Then rain. Then rain.

The French Girls

The "lost coast" is where Hwy 1 splits apart from the coast. My planned route was supposed to take me on  some old logging roads through the lost coast. Unfortunately Everything north of Usal beach was closed so I had to back track. Back to Hwy 1 where I rode it the 20 something miles to Hwy 101. If the roads would have been open, I would have missed the "drive through tree" in Legget. From Legget to Garberville was pouring and wet. No pictures from that stretch. I stayed at the only hotel in town with a hot tub and drank some wine to warm up. Dreams of the next day dancing in my head.

Planned route (red) vs. Actual route (dark blue 4/11/12 and light blue 4/12/12)

(4/12/12) The lost Coast
Morning brought sunshine for about an hour. Just long enough to get to Shelter Cove. I had a wonderful breakfast of rye crackers, sardines and sharp cheddar next to the ocean. The nice lady at the coffee shop warned me about the high winds north that I might encounter. The roads along the lost coast are quite horrible but very fun on a duel sport. "One lane" roads are common because the other side of the road slid down the hill.

By the time I got to Honeydew, the rain was so hard I could not see the centerline. Coffee and conversation lead to a break in the rain. The section of road from Petrolia to Furnale had some spectacular views and I even got to watch some lightning. Unfortunately no pics of that. The ride from Eureka to Crescent City was very cold and wet. A $45 dollar hotel had an awning to park the bike under but I didn't trust the sheets so I slept in the sleeping bag.

(4/13/12) Crescent City to Eugene
This is the first day I would actually leave California (YAY!) and leave the coast for an extended period. Right after breakfast I found some neat natural bridges.

In Oregon, here are OHV parks to play in the dunes and on the beach. I found out a loaded KTM 690 is not fun in dune sand... and as soon as I got to the beach, a park ranger tuned me around for not having a flag. Oh well, no pics of my bike on the beach. Lunch was a Pulled pork sandwich at a roach coach. Pretty uneventful from Florance to Eugene.

Day 1-4: The start!!!!

Wed April 4th was my last day working for a few years. Over the past 5 years I have worked on a dozen wind farms in 7 different states. Blattner Energy and the wind industry have been good to me.  As of now 5 days into my trip, it feels like I am just on a long weekend. This is what I am leaving behind:
Sunset Over the Mojave

All suited up in the Arcflash gear for transformer testing.

Day 1 (4/5/12) 229 miles.
I made it 5 miles into Mojave before my 1st stop. Stoken Donuts is a must stop for anyone traveling through Mojave. They guys there are amazing and they serve great breakfast and lunch. I recomend the the soup and deli sandwichs for lunch. You probably will not be able to finsih it. It was very windy leaving Mojave (go figure) so I was happy to get on the Angeles forest hwy. This is a great twisty road on a bike. I recomend it. I had so much fun leaning the bike over I didn't take any pictures. Day 1 ended in San Diego at Ryan's house. I averaged 49 mpg the whole day!

Stoken!
Ryan Has a sweet KZ1000 he is building right now. Good luck bud!

Day 3 (4/7/12) 219 Miles
After 2 nights of fun in San Diego it was time to head north. LA trafic sucked. Luckly in CA you can split lanes. I know I know, its dangerous but I would rather do that then have some cidiot rear end me in his beamer. Sushi for dinner in Malabu. I spend the night in a hotel 6 near Santa Barbara. Averaged 44 mpg due to the stop and go in LA.

Day 4 (4/8/12) 383 miles.
Was on the road by 7:00. Took HWY 1 all the way from Santa Barbara to San Fransisco. It was cold in the morning so I was bundled up and had to turn on the grip heaters. Afternoon was nice and it got cold again in the evening for the last 80 miles or so. Finished up the day with clam chouder and muscles at "The Old Clam House" in SF. Couch surfing to keep costs down. Thanks Megan
Great breakfast in Lompoc CA.
!
Looking south at Morrow Bay and HWY 1.
Hwy 1 south of Big Sur. There was to much traffic... still a fun ride.

Big Sur Inn. Great breakfast.. but they don't serve lunch!?!?!?
Dinner at "The Old Clam House"

Day 4: (4/9/12) SF
Bike is at SuperPlush Suspension (http://www.superplushsuspension.com/) Getting stiffer springs and revalve. I have a 950 ADV as a loaner. Fun bike... lots of balls! Tomorrow or Wed I continue up the coast! Next post will be Lost Coast/Humbolt action!
My Loaner. Fun bike.

Cal City-Barstow-Death Valley-Trona-Cal city (shakedown weekend)

Day 1- 41 miles
Friday March 23 we (Steve on a xr650, Sam on a KTM 525 and Me on the 690) got a late start and only made it about 40 miles before it got to dark to ride and we set up camp. It was enough to get us past HWY 395 and into some nice hilly desert. Sausage, zukini, carrots and some Saporo for dinner. We were in bed by 9:00.
Day 2 - 237 miles
Saturday March 24th started at the buttcrack of dawn with an amazing sunrize, coffee, polish sausage and eggs. We were on the bikes by 8:00 am and into Barstow by 11 after some good 2 track and a dry lake bed crossing. We stocked up on food and sam needed gas. He can only go 100 miles on a tank but he still had the best gas milage at 50 mpg. My average from California City to Baker was 45 mpg.

The powerline road from Barstow to Baker was very rocky and Sam got a flat about 5 miles out of Baker. The EnduroStar trail stand worked amazing.

The fuel stop turned into a 2 hour ordeal. Luckly there was an open auto shop in town who sold moto tubes. We then went north toward death valley and decided to ride Badwater road (paved) instead of west side road (un maintained) in order to make it to Furnace Creek by sundown. Amazingly we found an open tent site and settled in with some beef tri-tip in gravy over noodles with green pepers and zukini. Just because you are camping, dosen't mean you shouldn't eat like a king. We washed it down with some whisky and went to bed.

Day 3 - 181 miles
Sunday March 25th was the best day riding I have had in a long time. We had sunshine. We had wind. we had rain. We had margaritas by 5:30 at Glorias in California City. We rode west side road to Warm Springs cayon across to Coyote Canyon.

Gas in at Furnace Creek was hard to take.

There were some great cabins that anyone can stay in. The hardest part was not calling in
sick to work the next day and staying at the cabin. If only we knew they were there before hand.
We found some old iron that was abandoned.

Trona has 2 gas stations, and neither had gas. Luckly a nice older gentleman sold us 5 gallons and didn't murder us. The last 60 miles were done in driving rain. My hands were toasty warm with the heated grips and the Klim Badlands kept me dry. The day ended with steaks and margaritas at Gloria's in California City. Good shakedown for the new bike. Great ride. Good times with friends. Great weekend.
